Enrichment Programs
The FOCUS Program (Focusing On Children’s Unique Selves)
Developed by the Lower School faculty, the FOCUS Program nurtures a sense of self-worth by spotlighting each child at every level during all of the Lower School years. Through this experience, students build self-esteem and personal dignity while recognizing that every person is unique.
In Kindergarten, the focus is on “All About Me” which allows students to share things about themselves with their peers.
In First Grade, the focus is on writing and publishing a book of their "Favorite Things" which promotes their individuality.
In Second Grade, the focus is on special occasions, people, places, events, and accomplishments that take place between birth and second grade.
In Third Grade, the focus is on how students interact with their family and the world around them.
In Fourth Grade, the focus is on each student’s individual academic achievements.
Special Activities
Field Trips – Planned at each grade level to support, enrich, and enhance the curriculum, thus broadening a child’s knowledge base. Extensive thought and preparation go into planning these trips, thus maximizing the benefit students receive from these learning experiences.
Lower School students attend productions of the Dallas Children’s Theater and the Dallas Symphony as well as attend enrichment programs at Whole Foods Market, the Dallas Zoo, the Dallas Arboretum, the Museum of Nature and Science, and the Dallas Heritage Village.
Elementary Choir –An elementary choir experience is offered as an after-school program that meets once a week and is open to all interested students in third and fourth grades. In addition to performing at school, the elementary choir performs at several community events throughout the school year.
School Activities – Throughout the school year, Lower School classes participate in several school-wide events with Lakehill Upperclassmen.
Pep Rallies – Throughout the school year, Lakehill athletic teams are celebrated at all-school pep rallies.
Back-to-School Picnic – Families and students reunite with friends at the annual PFC Back-to-School Picnic, held on the Main Campus practice field the Saturday before the start of school.
Halloween Carnival – Lower School students dress in costume for the annual Halloween parade. Following the parade is an old fashioned carnival complete with storytellers, a haunted house, games, and more.
Trek for Tech – The annual 5k race is held each fall. All students are invited to enter the t-shirt design competition and to race in the 1 mile fun run or the 5k race.
Reindeer Games – Each year before the Winter Break, the Junior Class plans an afternoon of games and activities for students in kindergarten through fourth grade.
Senior Day – This all-school assembly honors our senior class and provides a venue for the seniors to share their college and career plans with all Lakehill students. The assembly spotlights a tradition of “passing down the legacy” when senior memorabilia is raffled to lower classmen.
Spring Treasure Hunt – Before spring break, the Junior Class sponsors a treasure hunt for students in first and second grades. Each class hunts for eggs and treats prepared by the Junior Class.
Field Day – Students participate in tug of war, sponge toss, and other field games at the annual field day celebration. Students form class teams, create class chants, and show their class spirit by wearing specially designed t-shirts.
Nature Exchange – Students in second through fourth grade may participate in the Nature Exchange program. Once a month students have the opportunity to trade an object from nature for Nature Exchange points. Students receive points for the object’s uniqueness, its rarity, and for the knowledge the students have about the item. Students may then exchange their points for an item from the Nature Exchange collection.
Athletics
The formal athletic program for Lakehill students begins in the sixth grade. Lower School students are involved in local YMCA teams and other city sponsored sports leagues, many of which practice at the Main Campus and are coached by parent volunteers. Our Lower School “Warriors” are celebrated annually at an all-school pep rally.
After School Groups
Students at Lakehill have opportunities to participate in several after school programs. Beginning in first grade, students are encouraged to get involved. Parent and teacher volunteers lead these and other after school programs.
