Science
The Middle School science curriculum at Lakehill Preparatory School focuses on an integrated study of the sciences including the three major disciplines of science: life science, earth science, and physical science. Students will learn how to manipulate and care for laboratory equipment and apply the methods of the scientific method to evaluate experiments. Students investigate the processes of science and use higher order thinking skills associated with making decisions, solving problems, and forming judgments. Students recognize that science is dynamic and current. The role of technology is an important part of the student’s education and is an essential ingredient in the science program. A successful learning experience in the Middle School program motivates students to use their natural curiosity in a way that will help make science relevant in their everyday lives.
In fifth through eighth grade, students take General Science, Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science respectively. All four Middle School science courses are lab based using the scientific method. Additionally, Middle School students have an elective offering of Nature Explorations and/or Anthropology. Each of these is a one semester course and can be taken beginning in the seventh grade year.
Students in Middle School visit the Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center once every six weeks. A comprehensice scope and sequence has been developed for the Environmental Science Center for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The science curriculum for each grade is themnatic and concepts introduced will be built upon from one year to the next. |
